Cleaning the Clutter Pt 3: Clothes & Shoes

Welcome to part 3 of my de-cluttering process! If you missed out on parts 1 and 2 you can check them out here:

I am down to only three weeks left in my apartment and still so much to do. I can’t officially get into my new house until the middle of June which means I will be staying somewhere else for 2 weeks. I will basically be living out of a suitcase during this time and even when I do get into our new house, I don’t want a bunch of shoes and clothes that I don’t wear lying around. That is the whole purpose of this purge, to get rid of things that I don’t like, want or even really need. I want to start fresh in a new home with NO CLUTTER and LESS STRESS!!

As you can see I do have a lot of clothes, for the most part I do only have stuff I wear and that I love. I think my biggest problem is holding on to clothes that are either too small or too big. I think I did a good job when it comes to clearing things out.

When it really comes down to it, I asked myself these questions to help while clearing out.

  • Does it fit? If it is too big or too small, then out it goes. The only exception I made is to one pair of jeans that is a size down from my current jeans. I kept them because my jeans i am wearing now are starting to get too big and I need something to wear once these don’t fit anymore.
  • Is it in good condition? If it has holes or stains on it, then why would I keep it? I know this is especially hard for those go to pieces that we love, but it eventually has to be done. So why not do it now and find something new that you can love equally as much!
  • Would I buy it today? You know those trendy items that go in and out of style within a few years? Those are the items I am talking about. The other half of this question refers to those items that looked great in the store, but we just never end up wearing. If its a recent purchase that you just don’t like as much as you thought, can you return it for something you do love?
  • Do I have multiples? Why in the world do you need 5 little black dresses? Exactly, YOU DON’T! Pick your favorite one or two and move the rest along!
  • Does this compliment my body type? We all have those items that just don’t quite look right on us for one reason or another. The reasons vary from gaining a few pounds to just having a little extra cleavage or booty. If you don’t look AND feel comfortable in something it’s time for that item to go no matter how cute it is.
  • Does it have sentimental value? Is the only reason you are holding on to something for sentimental reasons? If this is the case then go ahead and remove it from your closet and store it somewhere else. This way you clear up that little bit of room for things you actually wear.

After you follow these steps to clean out your closet you should only be left with items that fit you, compliment your body, and that you love!! For those of you who are holding on to those sentimental pieces a great idea would be to turn them into something useful. Are you hoarding a collection of old t-shirts from high school, college or your sorority(or frat) life? Then why not have them made into a quilt/blanket that you can actually display and use!

I have around 15 pairs of shoes and was able to get rid of 3. The two pairs pictured above were thrown away. The black ones are starting to fall apart and the silver ones are missing a lot of the little crystals and starting to break apart as well. I also have a pair of brown wedges that will be going to Goodwill because I really just don’t like them anymore. As far as clothes go, I got rid of quite a few things.

  • 5 T-shirts
  • 3 Tank Tops
  • 1 Dress
  • 1 Skirt
  • 4 Pairs of Shorts
  • 3 Bathing Suits
  • 1 Pair of Sleep Pants
  • 2 Pairs of Socks
  • 1 Bra
  • 1 Beach Hat
  • 6 Formal Dresses

These things will be going to various places. The less than good condition items will be going straight to the trash and the items that can be used by someone else will go to Goodwill. The higher price items such as the dresses will go to consignment. In return, I get a less cluttered closet and drawers. It makes me very happy. 🙂
